Denial of Service 2

Denial of Service Book 2
Published:  2009
Author: Steve Jordan
Overview:
I wasn’t sure when my brother had taken to listening to lite rock, but I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to handle it for long. Okay, maybe when I say “lite rock,” I’m exaggerating… no, I take it back. The radio is queuing up Abba. It was making it hard to concentrate on my web searching.

At about the time I was about to speak up and beg like a dog for him to find something else to listen to, the doorbell rang. A second later, Pete came out of his room, dressed in the baggies, tank top and sandals that were the standard dress uniform of San Diego. He started for the door… then veered towards the stereo. “Since when do you listen to Abba?” he said, as he punched the program control and an eighties rock station came on. Playing Van Halen. I was only marginally sure it was an improvement, at that.

Denial of Service 1

Denial of Service Book 1
Published:  2009
Author: Steve Jordan
Overview:
It was developing to be a good morning. I’d stopped at the Starbucks on the way to the client site, and Christie was in that morning, which meant I could just saunter in, cool as hell, and say “Hit me,” and she’d know I meant my usual “grande double-shot skim milk espresso with room, in my personal cup.” I love a day that starts off where I don’t have to say all that, especially before I’ve actually had one.

Then I got to the client site, where I didn’t have to kill a half-hour for the IT guys to show up and let me into the computer rooms. IT guys are pretty good about being late for work, since most of them are either working late fixing computer problems, out drinking themselves blind after they get out of a full day’s computer problems, or gaming ‘til 4 in the morning with other IT guys trying to blast the memory of yesterday’s computer problems away....

Trouble Insurance

Trouble Insurance by D.John Nyland
Published: 2012
Author: D.John Nyland
Pages: 81
Overview:

Several years ago, lacking empathy for ego-driven bosses, I decided I would be best off self employed. I thought long and hard about what a qualified CPA might do in a world that didn't involve bean counting. After due consideration I concluded that the only thing with growth potential was 'white collar crime'. I felt suitably qualified to deal with this, having worked for many years in an industry where almost everyone was one sort of crook or another.

So, to begin my makeover and after limited market research, I opened a small office. At the same time, despite lacking the financial resources to toss in my day job, I put an advertisement in the yellow pages offering myself as a private investigator.

Regular checks of my answering machine gave me nothing. After a few weeks, a strapping Scot named Gordon volunteered to be my first employee. Amazingly he found me a client, begining my investigative efforts with a whimper. From then, he maintained my business with his stalward efforts.
My next breakthrough, a change to the world of travel insurance fraud, was driven by my desperate need to escape corporate life. My searches for petty criminals, scammers and con artists inspired me to write about these shady characters who thought they could pull off the perfect crime. Some did, most didn't.

Along the way I discovered that half a million Aussies leave our shores each month, taking with them a complete ignorance of travel insurance. After investigating hundreds of claims I estimate that less than five percent were totally free of fraud, one quarter were totally fraudulent, half were severely padded and the remainder were only slightly exaggerated. Some defences of these claims may be useful to a reader planning a scam. Most stories are humorous.
